Motorhome insurance works in much the same way as car insurance. It insures you against your liability to others in the event of an accident and optionally insures your motorhome against at-fault damage or theft.

As with car insurance, multiple levels of cover are available:

  • Third party only (TPO)
  • Third party Fire and Theft (TPFT)
  • Comprehensive

However, there are some differences. Motorhome insurance policies are designed to reflect the way that most motorhomes are used. This means the cover they offer usually has some differences to a typical car insurance policy:

  • Usually includes cover for extended European use – e.g. 180 days per year or even more
  • Annual mileage is expected to be reasonably low
  • Generous cover included for personal possessions, fixtures and fittings – in recognition that a motorhome is both a vehicle and living accommodation
  • European breakdown recovery is often an option, regardless of your motorhome’s size and weight
  • Motorhome insurance usually excludes use in connection with employment or business

Considering how expensive motorhomes can be to buy, you might expect motorhome insurance to be expensive – it isn’t: Motorhome Insurance is usually cheaper than car or van insurance.

Try these two companies to compare motorhome/campervan insurance quotes:

Motorhome insurance is usually cheaper than car or van insurance.

The main reasons for this are:

  • Motorhomes tend to have very careful owners who are experienced drivers and over 30
  • Average mileages are low and motorhomes / campervans are not normally used for business purposes – most companies do not cover business use
  • Motorhomes are at lower risk of theft than cars

Most motorhome insurance companies will only insure recognised professionally-built motorhomes – not DIY campervan conversions.

However, there are some UK insurance companies who will insure DIY motorhomes – click here for our Self-Build Motorhome Insurance page.

Motorhome insurance is surprisingly cheap compared to car insurance. Especially when you consider how much motorhomes cost.

      Hi Colin,
In my experience, motorhome insurance is generally quite affordable compared to car insurance. To put it another way, if you can afford a motorhome, you can probably afford the insurance!

I don’t know what specific factors are likely to affect the cost of insurance, but I would say that it’s probably more important to focus on choosing a motorhome with a size and layout that will work well for you. In my view, the biggest cost/waste of money would be buying a motorhome and then not using or enjoying it as much as you hoped to.

Obviously this is only my opinion…

      Cheers

      Roland
