Review: All the Aires Spain and Portugal (4th edition)

Shortly before we headed off on our USA road trip (write-up to come shortly), the good people at Vicarious Books got in touch with a copy of the latest edition of their motorhome stopover guide for Spain and Portugal, “All The Aires Spain and Portugal”.
This slightly belated review covers the fourth edition of the guide, which was published in September 2015.
Even if you have an older copy of this book, it might be worth updating. According to Vicarious, the number of aires in Portugal has risen by 60% since 2013. In Spain the number of documented aires (in the guide) has increased by 37% since the third edition was published.
We first used the original edition of this guide, back in 2009. It’s certainly got considerably thicker since then, but retains the same excellent format. This new 4th edition includes details of the following locations in Spain and Portugal:
- 449 inspected aires (including 3 photos per aire)
- 242 LPG Autogas stations
- 105 all-year campsites
- GPS coordinates for each site
- Details of on site and local facilities
- Information about suitability for large motorhomes/RVs
For anyone who’s not familiar with Vicarious’ excellent range of All the Aires… guides, they all use a standard format. Each aire is illustrated with colour photos alongside driving directions, a description of the local area and a graphical key listing all facilities at the aire.
These guides are very easy to use and excellent for planning overnight or servicing stops.
Each book includes a fold-out map showing the locations of all the aires. This is perfectly good enough for most purposes, but a larger, seperate copy of this map is also included. Although this doesn’t include any more road detail, it is useful if you have poor eyesight, or want a map you can annotate as you travel around.
We say:
If you’re touring in Spain and Portugal and don’t want full campsite facilities, then “All the Aires Spain and Portugal” is pretty much indispensible. Highly recommended.
